Technique Records – 880 NE 79th St, Miami, FL 33138 – Open

The price we pay to go to record stores. Miami has some great record stores. I was in Florida. They were in Florida. Unfortunately, so were my friends. And they had no interest in record stores. In Florida or elsewhere. And I may never be in Miami again. What’s a vinyl guy to do?

Ah, but the vinyl gods were looking out for me. My friend said he wanted to play golf. And the ladies said there was a jewelry convention. Where, I say? Miami they say. How much time do you need? Its a big convention – 3 hours? And a record store tour is born. I’ll drive them to the convention center, and be free to visit …. Sweat Records, Yesterday and Today and Technique Records. And maybe they won’t buy anything. Or at least maybe my wife won’t.

The Store

Technique Records was founded in 2017 by store owner Mikey Ramirez, who previously had been an integral force behind the late great Radio-Active Records of Fort Lauderdale.

Listed as one of the eight best record stores in Miami by Secret Miami in a 2025 article, as well as the best record store in Miami (twice) by the Miami New Times (2023 and 2018), it did not disappoint.

Its a larger store, with plenty of well organized inventory. New and used vinyl abounds in many genres – Alternative, Latin, Goth, electronic, industrial, hip hop, dub, reggae, jazz, new wave, rnb, indie, funk, soul – you get the idea. Unlike other stores, they also have collector’s items, some of which you can see on the wall pictured below. Cassettes and cds are also offered. And for those who love the hunt, there are $1 bins, if you’re willing to bend. Prices were reasonable.

Technique Records also hosts in-stores – typically DJs spinning tunes on the two turntable store set up. And they even participated in Cassette Day in 2018. Yes, its a thing, or at least is was a thing, or a thing that is being revived.

Try before you buy is available. And like many modern day record stores, its clean, with no piles of records on the floor. Or the odd counter. Or shelf.

What the Press is Saying

The Miami New Times reported on the store’s opening in a December 29, 2017 piece Mikey Ramirez Opens Technique Records on Miami’s Upper Eastside.

Women in Vinyl posted a great interview with store manager Caroline Cardenas | Manager, Technique Records Written in April 2024, she describes the journey that led her to the store, and some of her experiences there.

And here’s a video tour from 2025 that will give you a better idea of the store and what it has to offer. Love the guy promoting cassette sales – he’s the one with the audio tapes coming out of his mouth.

Cool Vinyl Bought There

The Verve – A Northern Soul (1995)

The Verve – A Northern Soul (1995). This is a 2016 European reissue.

When this record was originally released in the ’90s, interest in vinyl had waned. As a result, very few pressings of this record (and many other ’90s standouts) made it to vinyl. Indeed, this was never released as an LP in the US in the ’90s, available only on cd. Originals are very pricey, and even harder to get.

Hailing from Wigan, the home of the Wigan Casino, the album’s title is a nod to its Northern Soul scene, and the all-niters held there. It is, however, by no means a northern soul record. Instead, its a groove heavy combination of psychelelia, shoegaze and rock, driven by Nick McCabe’s guitar, and Richard Ashcroft’s singing. Many of the songs exceed 5 minutes, allowing the band to stretch and immerse. It was released in 1995, before the band scored its biggest hit – Bitter Sweet Symphony – on 1997’s Urban Hymns.

This is A New Decade, the first track on the A Northern Soul lp. A great begining, you will have to wait about 9-11 seconds for the song to gear up and get going, but when it does, the wait will have been worth it.

Oh, and the vinyl gods were indeed looking after me. My wife didn’t buy any jewelry.
