A Guide To Record Stores And Music

Much of my life is spent hunting for and playing vinyl. I’ve been to hundreds and hundreds of record stores throughout the US and abroad, own over 5000 records, have countless mix tapes and more than 23,000 mp3s. When I was growing up, my weekends were spent in the Village, going from one record store to another to see what new music I could find (or playing basketball, but that’s for another day).

I have created this site to tell you about many of the stores I’ve visited. The site contains photos and a description of the store, its history and what it offers, as well as interviews of the store’s owners and video tours where available. To see a particular store just click on the Record Shops drop down menu, go to the state (or country) you’re interested in, and click on the store link. You can also see where the store is located by opening the Record Stores Map and clicking on the the green (open) or red (closed) marker. Expanding the map will reveal more stores in the same city and the store’s exact location. Clicking on the marker will take you to our article on the store.

The site also contains Song of the Day, a glimpse at what’s playing on my stereo today or discovered while exploring in a record store. You Tube videos let you hear the song, and you can read a brief review of the song and information about those playing it. You can access the complete list from the Song of the Day drop down menu. Songs are organized by genre. Song of the Day is regularly updated with songs I’ve found in my travels. They are often included in the post of the store in which I bought them. All are linked to and can be found in the Song of the Day index.

Feel like exploring? Or do you want to go back to what the algorithms feed you? The choice is yours – red pill or blue pill? Take the red pill, and see what rabbit holes I will take you down. You won’t be sorry.

I also provide Playlists I’ve put together over the years for your listening pleasure, which can be heard via You Tube as either a playlist, or song by song. Finally, you can find interesting articles about music and record collecting in our Features section.

This site was originally posted at recordshops.blogspot.com. We’ve moved it here to better present its information to you. If I’ve posted a picture of a store that you want me to delete please let me know and I’ll take it down.
